Born into a family with strong ties to the arts, Debashree Roy was destined for a career in show business. She and her elder sister, Nilanjana, first took steps into acting as children. Their first film was Aranyer Din Ratri, directed by Satyajit Ray. However, the sisters’ scenes ended up on the cutting room floor and their first significant roles came in the film “Balak Gadadhar” in 1969, where Debashree played the role of Rama.
Debashree’s breakthrough as an actress came in the early 1980s with the film “36 Chowringhee Lane,” directed by Aparna Sen. She received significant recognition for her performance and the film also garnered critical acclaim.
